Schloss Hülchrath is a former castle in the Electoral Cologne district of Hülchrath in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss district. The moated castle, located on the Gillbach, dates back to a 12th century castle and has retained a large part of its medieval building fabric.
The history of the complex illustrates very well the typical development of a noble residence in the Rhineland: Through continuous growth, a wooden motte changed from a two-part moated castle in the Renaissance to a castle complex, which was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century after destruction in the 17th century. In the Middle Ages, the Hülchrather complex was one of the most important state castles in the Cologne territory.
