Many residents come here to seek a bit of relaxation after their daily tasks or during the weekend. It is a beautiful promenade along the banks of the Rhine that was completed in 1995. It runs from the Medienhafen at the Stadttor, across Carlstadt to the Altstadt. You can stroll there wonderfully, undisturbed by traffic that runs underground here.
The Rhine riverside promenade has already received several awards, including the German Urban Development Award in 1998. Joggers, walkers, and ice cream carts abound!
Rhine Bank Tunnel
Around 1990, it was decided to divert the heavy traffic on the Rhine riverside road underground from the city gate to the Oberkasseler Bridge. This led to the creation of a tunnel complex nearly 2 km long in 1993. Above ground, this freed up space to create a car-free promenade where walkers and cyclists can go about their activities undisturbed. In an unused shaft of the traffic tunnel is the KIT museum.
