The Rheinaue Friemersheim nature reserve is located on the left bank of the Rhine in the Duisburg district of Rheinhausen, district of Friemersheim. Designated since 27 July 1979 and expanded in 1991, it now covers 262 hectares.
The nature reserve stretches from the harbour of the former Krupp ironworks in the north over six kilometres in length and a maximum width of 700 metres to the city limits of Krefeld in the south. In 1991, the city of Duisburg bought the property behind the dike from the Krupp company for 7.5 million DM, supported by the ÖPEL program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with 3.9 million DM, about 2 million euros. In 1992, the area was expanded from 186 to 262 hectares with the city's new landscape plan. Since then, around 51,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, 450 of which are fruit trees with old orchard varieties.
