The Kettwig Lake, located in the southern part of the Essen district of Kettwig, was built by the Ruhrverband from 1940 to 1950, after the Hengsen reservoir and before the Kemnader Lake, as the penultimate of the six Ruhr reservoirs. The Kettwig Lake is the last reservoir downstream along the Ruhr River; it is located about six kilometers behind the largest, the Baldeneysee.
