Grugabahn

The Grugabahn is a park railway in Grugapark in Essen. It originated from a steam-driven Liliput railway from 1938.

The railway operates on a route of about 3.3 kilometers in length. The circular course has the shape of a wide, winding figure eight, covering the entire area of Grugapark. The current trains, powered electrically by accumulators and offering about 90 seats, have been running since 1997 and traditionally carry the old names Angry Ant, Secret Love, Watchful Chicken, and Black Lene. The trains initially had a white color scheme and received their current colorful appearance in the mid-2000s. They are stored and maintained in a five-bay depot located in the park near the maze. Since 1992, the railway has been operated by the company Intamin. A year later, the city of Essen acquired the entire facility, and the train operations continue to be managed by Intamin.
