Baldeney Castle, also known as Haus Baldeney, is located in the Bredeney district of Essen and emerged from a medieval castle surrounded by a moat. It gave its name to Baldeney Lake, which was completed in 1933 and on whose north shore it stands, and is a listed building and ground monument.
Today's castle complex was built of Ruhr sandstone and, in addition to the main building, consists of an old agricultural building and the adjoining chapel. In the past, it was surrounded by a moat, which has been filled in since about 1890 but is still recognizable in the ground. The original land registry of 1875 still shows the property with wide ditches and farm buildings, which are no longer preserved today.
