The Witzhelden transmitter was a core network transmitter for television of the Deutsche Funkturm. It was located northwest of the village of Witzhelden. A 202.5-meter-high guyed steel tube mast with a diameter of 1.80 meters was used as the antenna support.
Construction of the transmission mast began on April 4, 1960; the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on December 22, 1960. It was built by Hein, Lehmann and Co., which was part of the Stumm Group at the time. On June 1, 1961, broadcasts of the then second program ARD 2 began, and on October 25, 1963, the regional program of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk was added. With the introduction of private television, RTL Television began broadcasting in April 1989, and from January 1993, VOX was also broadcast, until all analog television transmitters at this location were shut down in 2005.
On April 7, 2006, the 16-meter-high GfK cylinder, which had been installed on the mast in 1981 along with the analog television antennas, was dismantled with the help of a Russian transport helicopter. As a result, the height of the mast decreased from 220 to 202.5 meters.
