Description

The Mary Magdalene Church is the Roman Catholic parish church of Goch. The church gained great notoriety when, in the early hours of May 24, 1993, the Gothic tower from the 14th century completely collapsed. The priest and missionary Arnold Janssen, who was canonized in 2003, was baptized in this church in 1837.
Excavations of 1950 and 1953 showed that the present church had at least two pastors. A Gothic hall church was built on the site of the Romanesque predecessor. The central and northern naves of the church, which was consecrated in 1323, are still present. Originally, the church was dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Saint George, but the new church was given the patrocinium of Mary Magdalene. The cloth industry flourished in Goch and with it the desire to enlarge the church grew. In the 15th century, the southern side nave was demolished to make way for a larger and higher nave. The tower was also raised.
