The Adolf mine was a mine in Merkstein, a district of Herzogenrath. It belonged to the mines of the Aachen coalfield and mined hard coal from 1913 to 1972.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Eschweiler Mining Association had already acquired the Merkstein concession for the coal seams in the area of the later Adolf mine together with the Anna mine in neighbouring Alsdorf. However, it was not until the end of the century that the EBV decided to build a new mine in an open field between Merkstein and Plitschard. On June 12, 1889, the first sod was turned for the mine. It was named after Adolf von Steffens, chairman of the supervisory board of the EBV from 1871 to 1898.
