Heinsberg Castle

Heinsberg Castle is the ruin of a motte-and-bailey castle located in the district town of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The area referred to as Burg- und Kirchberg was expanded into a bastioned fortress in the 16th century.
The Burgberg/Kirchberg area is one of the largest preserved motte castles in the Rhineland. A natural terrain spur extending into the lowland on the edge of the Rur valley was divided by two cuttings into the Burgberg and Kirchberg. In this process, the end of the terrain spur, which is today's Burgberg, was artificially raised to a height of about 10 meters to form the main hill. The present-day Kirchberg served as the forecourt, where the Gothic collegiate church of St. Gangolf was built on the site of earlier structures in the 15th century. The exact construction history of the castle is not known. Archaeological investigations of the Burgberg revealed overlapping layers of settlement and debris from the 11th to the 16th century.
