The Battle of Linnich was a battle in the area of the present-day town of Linnich in the Düren district.
The battle took place on November 3, 1444, the feast day of St. Hubert. In the Second Geldrian Succession War, Duke Gerhard of Jülich-Berg achieved victory in this battle over Arnold of Egmond, the Duke of the Duchy of Geldern. In gratitude and as a remembrance of the fight, Gerhard established the Order of St. Hubert after the model of the Golden Fleece of the Burgundian Duke Philip the Good. Since that time, the veneration of St. Hubert in the Rhineland has strongly increased.
