In the 1960s of the 19th century, the parish church of St. Remigius, which was the only Catholic church in Viersen besides the small parish of St. Helena, became too small for the large congregation.
Since the walking distance to the church was very long for the believers from Bockert, Oberbeberich, and Hoser, the Bockert church building association was founded in 1868 out of the desire to build a daughter church. Interrupted by the war in the meantime, the association intensified its activities after 1871. Despite disputes over the building plot and the refusal of the believers from Hoser and Oberbeberich to support the planned church in Bockert, the foundation stone was laid by Pastor Stroux on June 15, 1890.
