The Dominican monastery in Greifswald, which due to the color of the order's habit was also referred to as the Black Monastery, existed from the 13th to the 16th century.
An inscription in the choir stalls of the Nicolaikirche in Röbel/Müritz indicates 1254 as the founding year of the Greifswald Dominican monastery. Duke Wartislaw III of Pomerania granted the Dominicans a plot of land on the city wall in the northeast of the then Greifswald Neustadt, at the border with the old town. There, in 1254, he established the new monastery with brothers from the Kammin Dominican convent, which he had founded in 1228. Among them were also the first prior Berthold and the lector Florentius as members of the convent, who were specifically mentioned in a document in 1264.
