Alexander's Monastery

The Monastery Alexanderdorf – Benedictine Abbey St. Gertrude is a women's monastery located in the district of Alexanderdorf in the district of Kummersdorf-Alexanderdorf, part of the municipality of Am Mellensee in the Teltow-Fläming district, Brandenburg. The only post-Reformation Benedictine convent in Brandenburg was established in 1934 in a former manor house and was elevated to abbey status in 1984. Around thirty Benedictine nuns live in the abbey according to the Rule of St. Benedict. The patron saint of the monastery is St. Gertrude of Helfta.
The roots of the Alexanderdorf Monastery date back to 1919 in Berlin. Nurses who served in the military hospital during World War I came together with the aim of celebrating the church liturgy, including the Eucharist and the Hour of Prayer, alongside their work. In 1924, the community was recognized as the St. Hildegard Sisterhood.
