The Finkenheerd Power Station, later known as the Finkenheerd Cogeneration Plant, was a controlled heat lignite-fired power plant built by the Märkische Elektrizitätswerke. It was located on Lake Brieskow near the German-Polish border in the Brieskow-Finkenheerd district, about ten kilometers south of Frankfurt, and was in operation from 1923 to 1992.
In 1916, the MEW, which had been founded by AEG in 1909, decided to build a large power plant in a favorable location in the rural area around the city of Frankfurt in order to establish and expand the national supply of electrical energy to the east of Berlin. In 1923, the construction of a power station according to the plans of Georg Klingenberg under the direction of Georg Warrelmann began on Lake Brieskow. The coal was to be extracted via the Finkenheerd lignite mine, which had been in operation since 1907, by direct feeding. According to calculations at the time, the mine's stockpile was to last about 170 years. The power plant was designed as a model plant and was to be completed and commissioned in several phases of construction. For example, the transverse arrangement of the boiler rooms in relation to the nacelle axis offered the possibility of expanding the installation at a later date. The inflation of 1922 seriously jeopardized the construction project and caused MEW such problems that it considered selling the machines it had just purchased in the short term. In 1923, the first phase of construction was completed and put into operation with an output of 12.5 MW from two machines. The energy generated was at high voltage and transmitted via a 50 kV line in Frankfurt, where it relieved the pressure on FEW's power plants. In the following years, further expansion steps were carried out. In 1928, the power was increased to 120 MW, in 1932 to 170 MW and in 1942 to 270 MW after the installation of two more turbochargers. In 1932, other coal mines were opened, the Katja open-pit mine and in 1943 the Hélène open-pit mine.
