Theatre of laughter

The Theater des Lachens is an independent puppet theater based in Frankfurt, Ziegelstraße 31. The theater mainly deals with the puppet genre and puppet theater and offers regular programming for adults and children. In addition, theatre is represented in many puppet theatre festivals in Belgium and abroad. Since 2006, the Lachens Theatre has been organising the Osthafen Eastern European Puppet Theatre Festival every two years.
Today's theatre grew out of the former Frankfurt State Puppet Theatre. The first artistic director of the puppet theatre in the former EFKA cinema building was Irene Merzdorf. The theater was threatened with closure in the early 1990s, and it did not seem possible to continue without the support of the municipality, the state and the free use of the place. In 1992, a group of players and employees took over the site, which had been made available to the municipality. They founded the Small Theatre, Puppet and Drama Association. The artistic director at the time, Astrid Griesbach, shaped this theatre with her unique signature, tragedy and comedy and made it known beyond the city's borders with her productions, such as "Danton's Death". Since 1996, the Theater des Lachens has been performing in one of the most beautiful theaters in Brandenburg, the former Maschinensaal of the Gerstenberger Höfe at Ziegelstraße 31.
