Bahnitz Lock

The Bahnitz lock is a lock in a breakthrough in the course of the Lower Havel waterway near the Bahnitz district of the municipality of Milower Land.
In 1904, it was laid down by law that in the area of the Lower Havel below the city of Brandenburg, receiving water conditions were to be improved in such a way that river meadows that were not should have dried up by 1 June of each year at the latest. As a first construction measure, the river cross-section was widened in many places. Furthermore, breakthroughs were made in the area of river bends. Such a breakthrough was made near the village of Bahnitz. In order to counteract adverse effects in dry periods due to the accelerated water drainage due to the shortening of the flow distance, dams were built near Bahnitz, Grütz and Garz. These dams consist of large needle weirs in the middle of the river, which are intended to maintain the required water level, and small weirs at the edges. These were created with a flow width of 6.40 metres for fine adjustments. Furthermore, barge locks for smaller vessels were built. For example, not far from the Bahnitz lock, the Bahnitz barge lock was built. The fortifications at Bahnitz were completed in 1912.
