Vietznitz has been a district of the municipality of Wiesenaue since October 26, 2003, situated at the edge of the Ländchen Friesack.
There are various interpretations for the place name Vietznitz or also Viecenitz, as it was written in its first documentary mention in 1365; one interpretation is "row of houses or village," derived from the Latin "vicus"; Vietznitz is a typical row village. Another interpretation is of Slavic origin: "Vysnica" means 'high-lying place'; this interpretation refers to the name "Jan Vycentytz," which was mentioned in the first documentary reference from 1365. The Slavic origin is quite possible, as Vietznitz was a Slavic settlement area and rises from the low marshland. As Vietzenitz, it was mentioned in the Riedelschen Codex diplomaticus Brandenburgensis of 1847.
