Biesenthal Weir Mill

Wehrmühle is a residential area of the town of Biesenthal, about 1.5 kilometres north of the city centre. It takes its name from the Biesenthal dam mill, a mill complex on the Finow that has existed since the Middle Ages. The mill building burned down in 2002, but an administrative building converted into a villa in 1907 remains.
It was first mentioned in a document as Werremole or Werremol as early as 1375. In the time of the castle lords on the Schlossberg in Biesenthal, the fortified mill served as a protective shield for the castle complexes. The name refers to a Landwehr, danger arose, so the water of the Finow was dammed until the area around the castle was flooded. In the dry, only the castle remained on the Schlossberg. In the time of the Ascanians, when the construction of the fortified mill fell, however, no significant military conflict took place around Biesenthal. At that time, Finow Castle near Hohenfinow was the most exposed position on the border with the Slavs and withstood all siege attempts, which is why there were hardly any clashes in the hinterland.
