The Great Samith Lake is a natural body of water located in the district of Spechthausen, a district of the town of Eberswalde in the Barnim district of Brandenburg. It lies about two kilometers southwest of Finow airport, seven kilometers west of the town of Spechthausen. The village of Melchow is located three kilometers southeast, closer to the lake, as is Biesenthal, which is situated five kilometers southwest. Today, the southwest shore of the Great Samith Lake forms the administrative boundary between the cities of Eberswalde and Biesenthal.
The Great Samith Lake is located in a forested area within the nature reserve Finowtal-Pregnitzfließ. It covers an area of 42 hectares, with its water surface located 32 meters above sea level. The lake, which was still 54.7 hectares in size and up to 16 meters deep in 1915, is surrounded by an extensive shallowing zone characterized by a narrow belt of quaking grass and a swamp forest of alders, pines, and birches with dense undergrowth. On the southeast side, two small tributaries flow into the lake, while the outflow on the northwest side flows into the Finow approximately one kilometer after leaving the lake. To retain more water in the region, peat areas were dammed and drainage ditches made ineffective at the Samith Lake in 2012 as part of the EU Interreg IV A project.
