Reppist

Reppist was a village northeast of Senftenberg. In 1986, Reppist was almost entirely a victim of the expansion of the Meuro open-pit mine. 582 inhabitants have been resettled. Today, only a few uninhabited houses bear witness to the village itself.
The village was first mentioned in 1370. The name is derived from the Sorbian word for turnip repa. The fertile fields and meadows of the village were irrigated by the Sornoer and the Schwarze Elster. The inhabitants also practiced viticulture. From 1738, a municipal seal was passed down for the first time, which contains the representation of a grape. Reppist was located on an old imperial road that leads from Beeskow to Dresden. The village, which originally had a horseshoe-shaped form of settlement, consisted mainly of four-sided farms until the beginning of lignite mining, none of which are still preserved. During the development of new open-pit mines, the village began to develop into a miners' colony. Around 1850, lignite was first mined in underground mining around Reppist. In 1871, a Protestant mountain chapel was built by the Henkel lignite factory. In 1974, this chapel was demolished due to the advance of open-pit mining. On January 1, 1974, Reppist was incorporated into Senftenberg.
