Kagel is part of the municipality of Grünheide in the district of Oder-Spree, Brandenburg, Germany. The place name developed from Kogele, Kagula and Cagell in the 17th century to finally Kagel.
The village was first listed in a document in 1375 in the land book of Emperor Charles IV. The first settlements date back to the Wends, a Slavic tribe. Around 1200, monks of the Cistercian order settled here, built a country monastery on the shores of Lake Baberow and were the first to discover limestone in Rüdersdorf as a valuable mineral resource in the 15th century. Due to the discovery of limestone, the monastery lost its economic importance. The monastery was attacked and looted by robber barons of the von Quitzow family. The Cistercians eventually abandoned the monastery of Kagel. As a result, Kagel developed into an agricultural village with up to 250 inhabitants. During the Thirty Years' War, Kagel, like the entire region, suffered the consequences of the war. The population was only 83 people in 1624. In the following years, the village recovered only slowly.
