Hangelsberg was an independent municipality until 25 October 2003, which is now part of the municipality of Grünheide in the north of the Oder-Spree district in Brandenburg. Hangelsberg is divided into the districts of Hangelsberg Ort, Spreetal and Wulkow.
Hangelsberg is surrounded by pine and oak forests, meadows and floodplains in which the Spree meanders. Behind the green edge of the course of the Spree, a ridge, the Hangel, completes the panorama of this landscape. However, the "hanging mountains", first mentioned in 1217, are not said to be the direct namesake of the municipality. Rather, this name is also derived from a small stream that was called "Hangel" in old forestry records, but is also known as "Trebuser Graben" or "Trebuser Fließ" because of its origin in Lake Trebus. The ditch once led into the Spree, but is hardly recognizable today.
