Blunoer South Sea

The Blunoer South Sea is a former open-pit mining lake of the Lusatian lake chain in the Saxon part of the Lusatian Lake District, in the area of the municipality of Elsterheide. The lake owes its name partly to its location south of the village of Bluno, and partly due to the planned tourist use, associations with the South Sea are quite welcome.
The lake is created by flooding the remaining pit "Nordschlauch" of the Spreetal open-pit mine. Other lakes in this former brown coal open-pit mining area include the Sabrodter Lake in the east, the Neuwieser Lake in the south, and the Bergener Lake in the southeast. When the lake reaches its intended final water level of 104 m above sea level in 2015, it is expected to cover an area of 350 hectares. In March 2011, it was three-quarters filled.
