The Bürgerhaus Spremberg is a modern building created from the conversion of a GDR prefabricated building, located directly on the market square of the town of Spremberg. It is characterized by modern, innovative architecture and efficient management. Particularly striking, and not yet implemented in Germany, is the seamless transition of wall and roof surfaces, executed in the same material and treated with the same color. The population took part in the conversion of the former workers' housing to the "Bürgerhaus" to an unprecedented extent due to the sensitive location.
Due to the impacts of war and destruction during and after World War II, 70 percent of the buildings in the fortress-designated town of Spremberg were damaged. The market square of the town was particularly hard hit. Only the west side with the town hall located there and some buildings on the east side of the market square remained intact. All six commercial and residential buildings that stood on the south side of the market square, the current location of the Bürgerhaus, fell victim to the war. Most of the other buildings were, with a few exceptions, demolished and temporarily replaced by large green spaces.
