Wittenberg Castle is the former residence of the Saxon electors. It was completely rebuilt from 1489 and was one of the most magnificent early Renaissance castles in Germany when it was completed in 1525. After the fires of 1760 and 1814 and the loss of importance of the city of Wittenberg due to the Schmalkaldic War and the Congress of Vienna, not much remains of the building's former glory.
The existence of a castle was first mentioned in a document in 1187. In 1338, Wittenberg Castle appears for the last time in documents, as a new Ascanian castle was built on the current site around 1340 under the Duke of Ascania and later the first Elector of Saxony, Rudolf I. From that time on, the castle served as the official residence of the servants. It was demolished in 1489 as part of the reconstruction work of the castle to make way for new office buildings.
