The villa is located at the address Hubertusstraße 3 in an elevated position on the banks of the Bode, directly at the exit of the Bode Valley on a small rocky plateau. Nearby is the Peace Park, the spa park of the city, as well as the buildings historically built in connection with the park. Its striking location leads to a special landscape effect, which is already documented on lithographs from the 19th century.
The building was built in 1848 in the English Neo-Gothic style. The builder was the secret government and building councillor Carl Albrecht Rosenthal, to whom the name still in use today goes back. After his death, his daughter Elisabeth Rosenthal took over the property in 1879, but sold it to Hermann Kersten after only three years. At that time, the villa consisted of a massive summer house with a tower. Kersten converted the villa into a guesthouse and expanded the building. He ran the guesthouse until 1919. Several owners and uses followed in quick succession until Robert Männicke, manufacturer and timber merchant, finally acquired the villa in 1923 and converted it into a private residence. During this time, the building received its present design. Influenced by the Bauhaus style, the façade was designed in a minimalist way. Instead of the wooden balconies typical of the region, massive bay windows were placed.
