Groppendorf was mentioned in 1112 as Grippendorf. In 1910, 209 inhabitants lived in the rural community of Groppendorf and 74 in the Groppendorf estate district. On 30 September 1928, the Groppendorf estate district was united with the Groppendorf rural municipality. In 1933, the volunteer fire brigade was founded in the village, which still exists today. On 1 July 1950, Groppendorf was incorporated into Hakenstedt. On 1 January 2010, the incorporation into Erxleben took place.
In the village stands the St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the early 13th century. Other listed buildings are the farm Dorfstraße 7 and the Veltheimsche Gutshof at Dorfstraße 13, 15, which belonged to the von Veltheim family at Harbke Castle.
