Borby

The former seaside resort of Borby on the Eckernförde Bay was incorporated into the city of Eckernförde on April 1, 1934, at the instigation of the then NS mayor of Eckernförde, Helmut Lemke. At the time of incorporation, Borby had 2,234 inhabitants over an area of 347 hectares, making it the municipality with the second highest population in the Eckernförde district, after Eckernförde and before Gettorf. Today, the population of Borby is approximately three times that amount. Former place names include Borgheby and Borbye.
The Eckernförde district of Borby itself has several localities – among them are: Alt-Borby, Borbyhof, Feldwegsiedlung, Borbyer Hagen, Hasenheide, Borbyer Hufe. Schnaap was until the incorporation a district of Borby. The Vogelsang, which is now generally considered part of Borby again, belonged to Eckernförde as a district from 1708 to 1934, previously to Borby; however, in terms of school and church, the Vogelsang remained with Borby after 1708. Only a small part of the locality Püschenwinkel in the far north belongs to Borby – the larger part belongs to Eckernförde-Nord. The name dates back to the old field designation Piscen Winckel; Püschenwinkel also includes areas of the former Koln Barg area.
