Hirschstein Castle

Hirschstein Castle is a castle that originated from a medieval fortification located in the municipality of Hirschstein in the district of Meißen. It rises impressively on a 25-meter-high rock on the left bank of the Elbe opposite Neuseußlitz.

A fortification was already mentioned at this location in 1205, although it likely existed as early as the 10th century. From 1420, the von Birkigt family and from 1451, the von Haugwitz family are referred to as the lords of Hirschstein. It was not until 1497 that the term "castle" was used in connection with the structure. A document from the year 1551 mentions the name Nau Hirstein. The ownership of the castle changed multiple times, primarily involving nobles from the Dresden court. Around 1590, the castle was acquired by Hartmann Pistoris from the noble scholar family Pistoris and remained in the family's possession until the death of Johann Ernst Pistoris. In the 17th century, the complex was expanded. A settlement developed around the castle, taking the name Hirschstein. A manor developed, to which the residents of the places Althirschstein, Bahra, Böhla, Blattersleben, Fichtenberg, Kobeln, Leckwitz, Weißig, and Windorf had to provide corvée labor.
