It was founded in 1966 as an initiative by citizens, businesses, and institutions in the city and is home to more than 75 species and breeds from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America on an area of 6.5 hectares. The zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Programme and houses a pair of the endangered balistar. Breeding has so far been unsuccessful.
