The giant oak is a remarkable and well-known tree in the region near Niedergurig in the Bautzen district and a natural monument. It is located a little south of the village at the Großer Ziegelteich. Their age is estimated to be between 700 and 800 years. The circumference of the trunk at chest height is 8.87, on the ground 10.40 meters, the height is 22 meters. In 2001, the circumference of the trunk was 7.93 meters at the point of its smallest diameter, and in 2004, it was 8.98 meters at a height of one meter. Around 1930, the trunk of the oak tree was filled with concrete, as the tree was partly hollow. During the summer of 2002, it burned inside the tree for several days; Since then, his condition has continued to deteriorate. In December 2019, two more arson attacks were perpetrated on the tree. The oak is a nature reserve.
He is depicted as a symbol of the municipality of Malschwitz, to which Niedergurig also belongs, in his coat of arms.
