The Shell Minna, also known as the Toberentz Fountain after its architect Robert Toberentz, is a fountain built in 1887 in the Postplatz square in the city of Görlitz. The name originated from the common people's term for the bronze statue located on the marble pedestal. The statue was melted down during World War II. Since 1994, an authentic reproduction has been displayed on the fountain.
The first post office in the city of Görlitz was established in 1855 at the old livestock market. In 1865, a new building for the district court was constructed on the opposite side of what is now called the Postplatz. The area between the two buildings was landscaped. When Prussian Interior Minister Robert Viktor von Puttkamer visited the city in 1877, he recommended enhancing the square with an artistic fountain to make it more attractive. Together with Mayor Johannes Gobbin, he worked to raise the necessary funds for this. In 1878, Prussian Culture Minister Adalbert Falk approved 75,000 marks from state funds. An additional 30,000 marks were raised from the city budget, along with 15,000 marks from donations. In 1885, the Prussian government granted an additional subsidy of 15,000 marks, supplemented by municipal funds of 10,200 marks.
