KZ-External Camp Görlitz

The Görlitz external camp was an external facility of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp in the city of Görlitz. In popular parlance, the camp is also referred to as KZ Biesnitzer Grund, although it never had the status of an independent concentration camp and was listed as "Görlitz external camp" in the main Groß-Rosen camp. The camp existed from August 1944 until the end of the war on May 8, 1945.

The Waggon- und Maschinenbau AG Görlitz leased the premises of the former Roscher brickworks from the city of Görlitz in 1939 to establish a barrack camp for forced laborers. Initially, 300 French prisoners of war were accommodated there. After the start of the Russian campaign, so-called Eastern workers were interned in the camp. In November 1940, the WUMAG was declared a "war-essential company". This was the prerequisite for the establishment of a "Central Labor Camp" of the Schmelt organization at the end of April 1943. Between 270 and 350 Jewish inmates from Upper Silesia worked for the WUMAG until April 1944 and were taken to the KZ external camp Kittlitztreben after the liquidation of the Görlitz ZAL. Adolf Eichmann placed the Görlitz ZAL and 27 other camps of the Schmelt organization under the command of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp.
