The Scheibe Lake, also known as Scheibesee and in Upper Sorbian Šibojski jězor, is a flooded open-pit mining pit located east of Hoyerswerda in Upper Lusatia. Until the mid-1980s, the village of Scheibe stood in its place, which was excavated for lignite mining by the Scheibe open pit. The flooding began on August 14, 2002, and according to information from the Lusatian and Central German Mining Administration Company, it was 70% completed by March 2004. By 2011, the lake, where the borders of the municipalities of Spreetal, Lohsa, and Hoyerswerda meet, was completely flooded.
The Scheibe Lake is part of the emerging Lusatian Lake District and is intended for recreational use like the other open-pit mining lakes in Lusatia. It is planned to eventually have five bathing beaches and is already a popular destination for cyclists and inline skaters. However, it should be noted that the terrain off the paths is still prone to landslides. In the sampling conducted in June 2014, the water still had a very low temporary pH level of 4.3.
