Marzoll Castle was originally only two storeys. From 1527 to 1536 it was rebuilt and extended by the Reichenhall patrician family Fröschl and converted into a Renaissance palace. By owning salt boiling plants in Reichenhall, the Fröschls had acquired their enormous fortune. The family residence was built in the then new architectural style of the Renaissance, which came from Italy. The complex, in the form of a cubic structure with four round corner towers, was the first of its kind in Bavaria. In the course of the 16th century, the gate and the ring wall were probably added. Under the lords of the castle from 1605 to 1798, the Barons Lasser von Lasseregg from Salzburg, further outbuildings were erected in 1708 and around 1750 the rooms on the second floor were furnished with representative stucco. The stucco work was done by Benedikt Zöpf, who also decorated the church of St. Valentin next to the castle in Rococo style during this time. . From 1798 onwards, the Barons von Laßberg zu Marzoll succeeded as owners by inheritance. In 1833 Marzoll was finally auctioned off due to high debts and came to the Baron of Aretin. He finally passed on the property to Erasmus Freiherr von Malsen by way of purchase. Erasmus was President of the Royal Council of Justice. He was a member of the Bavarian Parliament in Munich and his wife Therese, née Baroness von Ruffin, lady-in-waiting to the queen. He had the exterior of the castle redesigned from 1837 onwards. The Renaissance domes of the four corner towers were removed and replaced by battlements in the neo-Gothic style. A crenellated wreath was built on the outer walls of the main building. From 1951 to 1991, the castle was inhabited by the Barons of Ritter zu Groenesteyn, descendants of the Marzoll line of the Barons of Malsen, before it became the property of the town of Bad Reichenhall. Since then, the exterior has been renovated and the interiors secured. The castle courtyard is open during the day, the interiors are only accessible as part of a guided tour.
