Falkenberg Sewage Fields

The Falkenberg Sewage Fields are an 84.2-hectare nature conservation and Natura 2000 area in the Berlin district of Falkenberg in the district of Lichtenberg.
At the end of the 19th century, the city councillor for construction, James Hobrecht, also created large sewage fields in the Berlin area and built a sewer system. The sewage fields, which were used for the city's wastewater at the time, are cleaned by irrigation. The sludge dried out completely due to seepage, the valuable fertilizer obtained from it was used for the sewage fields and the sandy and nutrient-poor soil was used for grain and vegetable cultivation. The Rieselfelder, which is now used as a nature reserve, was built around 1884. In the 1950s and 1960s, it became known that wastewater volumes were increasingly contaminated with pollutants. In 1968, a sewage treatment plant was put into operation in Falkenberg, after which the sewage fields were no longer needed. On 29 March 1995, the Falkenberg sewage fields were placed under nature conservation. In the area, which has been placed under nature conservation, there are still remnants such as trickle and seepage basins, ditches and hedges.
