Upper Iller Bridges

The Upper Iller Bridges are two bridges running parallel at an angle of 30° over the Iller River in the city area of Kempten in the Allgäu. The structures were built by the Royal Bavarian State Railways between 1904 and 1906. Directly next to the Upper Iller Bridges stands the old King Ludwig Bridge from 1851. The bridges are considered the largest rammed concrete bridges in the world.
Between 1904 and 1906, the construction companies Alfred Kunz from Kempten and Dykerhoff & Widmann built the arch bridges according to the plans of building councilor Beutel. The northern structure served as a railway bridge with four tracks for the route tracks to the old freight station. The bridges also facilitated track switching operations and direction changes. The bridge is 36 meters high.
