St. Blasien District Museum

The Kreismuseum St. Blasien is a local heritage museum in St. Blasien, located in the district of Waldshut near the St. Blasien Cathedral.

Opened in 1989, the museum is situated in the House of Guests, the former monastic horse stable building. It showcases the history of the St. Blasien monastery from the origin of the remote Cella Alba to the significant Benedictine abbey in the Black Forest. Among other items, books from the once-rich monastery library are displayed. Objects from the former Baden gun factory, old advertisements, and photos explain the further development of the area around the monastery into a fashionable resort with sanatoriums. The evolution of skiing in the Black Forest is also depicted. In addition to the ski museum in Hinterzarten, founded by Georg Thoma, the first skis manufactured in Germany are presented here. Furthermore, it provides information about landscape, nature, geology, as well as art and culture. The Nature department was initially designed by Dieter Knoch. Works by the painters Hans Thoma, Franz Xaver Winterhalter, and Hermann Fidel Winterhalter can be seen. Special exhibitions take place.
