Chemnitz Valley Viaduct

The Chemnitztalviadukt refers to two parallel railway viaducts over the river Chemnitz and the federal road 107 in the northern part of the city of Chemnitz. The two staggered bridges of significantly different heights are considered a defining element of the cityscape and are protected as historical monuments. The bridges span the Blankenauer Straße with an arch-like effect.
The older of the two bridges was built from July 1869 to June 1871 as part of the railway line Neukieritzsch–Chemnitz and was put into operation on April 8, 1872. The construction cost about 163,000 thalers. The bridge structure is divided into two parts. A 180 m long section made of six steel trusses, each 25.5 m long, spans the river Chemnitz, followed by a masonry bridge section that is 118 m long with nine arches. The federal road 107 is spanned with an opening of 11.7 m, while the other eight arches each have a clear width of 9.8 m. The total length of the bridge is 308 m, and the masonry bridge section is slightly curved. In 2003, the steel part was renovated for 1.5 million euros. Colloquially, the bridge was also called the "Klapperbrücke" because the steel part made loud noises during train operations.
