St. Coloman

The Baroque Colomans Church is located near Schwangau in Bavaria. It was built in its current form in the 17th century on the site of a predecessor structure that was erected in honor of Saint Coloman. The Irish pilgrim is said to have rested at this spot during his pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the summer of 1012. The church, due to its location at the foot of the Schwangau Mountains and its proximity to the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle, is one of Bavaria's most famous attractions.
Originally, a small field chapel, likely dating back to the 15th century, stood at the site of the present church. Under the Füssen master mason Hieronymus Vogler, the reconstruction of the preserved house of worship began in 1673. Already in 1671, the Wessobrunn stucco artist Johann Schmuzer had submitted a design for the building, based on which the construction work was carried out. The building was completed in 1678. In 1682, the tower on the west side of the main choir was added. The consecration took place only in 1685, together with Schmuzer's Frau-am-Berg Church in Füssen. The foreboding was added in 1714.
