The Salzach is the left upper stream of the Saalbach in the Kraichgau region of western Baden-Württemberg. It springs near Maulbronn in the Enz district, is the main conduit for the water supply of Maulbronn Monastery, and merges with the Weißach after 15 kilometers in Bretten in the Karlsruhe district.
The name Salzach refers to a possible earlier salt extraction at Salzhofen, a site that has been partially built over with newer houses at the southern edge of the city of Bretten. In the Middle Ages, the Saalbach was known as Salzach until its mouth.
