District Court of Hanau

The Hanau District Court is a court of ordinary jurisdiction and one of nine district courts in Hesse. It is located in Hanau.
The highest court of the region was the Court of Appeals in the County of Hanau-Münzenberg. It was strengthened by a privilege de non appellando during the reign of Count Philipp Ludwig II in 1606, which prohibited appeals to imperial courts for all legal disputes with a value of less than 500 guilders. After the death of the last Hanau count, Johann Reinhard III, Landgrave Friedrich of Hesse-Kassel inherited the County of Hanau-Münzenberg in 1736 but immediately ceded the acquisition to his younger brother, Wilhelm VIII, since he himself was King of Sweden and permanently resided abroad. Due to the special circumstances in the family of the Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel, the County of Hanau-Münzenberg continued to be treated as a secondary title for younger princes of the Landgraviate for over half a century, initially for Wilhelm VIII and from 1760 for Crown Prince Wilhelm. The judiciary and the Court of Appeals remained independent as well. Only from 1786, when Landgrave Wilhelm IX also inherited the Landgraviate, was the County of Hanau-Münzenberg more closely integrated with the Landgraviate. In 1791, Wilhelm IX did obtain a new, unlimited privilege de non appellando illimitatum for the County of Hesse-Hanau-Münzenberg; however, in the same year, the Higher Appellate Court in Kassel became the highest judicial instance for Hanau as well.
