The University Library of Marburg is the library system of Philipps University Marburg, whose history dates back to the beginnings of Philipps University. The former central library in the Lahn Valley next to the Faculty of Philosophy was relocated in 2018 to the Campus Firmanei at the current location on Pilgrimstein next to the Old Botanical Garden, and merged with several humanities and social science subject libraries. The University Library is the central lending library with a magazine, lending service, textbook collection, media center, and over 140 PC workstations, as well as a total of about 1250 reading places.
The UB is supplemented by departmental libraries that are distributed across multiple locations throughout the city of Marburg, including the Lahnberge.
In total, the collection of the UB comprises approximately 4.2 million volumes, of which about 3.2 million are housed in the new building. A larger part of the UB’s holdings – textbook collection, subject-specific open shelves, open magazine with specialized books and journal collections – is directly available for loan at the location. However, the much larger lending stock of the UB is stored in the closed magazine. Some of the central services of the UB can also be used outside of opening hours.
