The fortifications on the Klüt, also called Fort George or Klütfestung, were located on the elevation of the Klüt west of Hamelin. The fortifications, built at the end of the 18th century, consisted of four forts. They served the military protection of the fortress of Hamelin on the opposite bank of the Weser. Hamelin thus became the strongest fortress of the Electorate of Hanover and was considered the "Gibraltar of the North" at the end of the 18th century. Following a decree of Napoleon, the fortifications on the Klüt and those of the city of Hamelin were razed in 1808.
