Red Mill

The Rote Mühle, also known as Rohmannsmühle, is located on the right bank of the Ruhr, at river km 38.4, about 1.5 kilometres northeast of the Essen district of Heisingen.

Baron Bernhard von Vittinghoff gen. Schell had a grinding mill built in 1685 for the production of rifle barrels. In 1752 it was converted into a grain mill. The first tenant was the miller Johannes Rohmann. In 1752, a stone rest house was built opposite the mill, as "the boatmen were not allowed to sail on the Ruhr at night". In 1774, a Baron von Schell had a lock built at his own expense for coal shipping on the Ruhr. This had to be renewed several times in the following decades. The lock chamber is still preserved today. However, due to the damming of Lake Baldeney, the lock gates were no longer necessary and were removed in 1964. The ferry house and lock were added to the list of monuments of the city of Essen on 9 January 1986 and 23 September 1992 respectively.
