The St. Josef Hospital Essen-Werden is part of the University Medicine Essen and an academic teaching hospital of the University of Duisburg-Essen. It is located in the center of the Essen district of Werden.
In the formerly independent Abbey town of Werden, the care for the poor and sick was in the hands of monasteries and hospices until the middle of the 19th century. In 1854, the parish of St. Ludgerus took the initiative to establish a hospital in Werden. To this end, they acquired the Ferber inn opposite the fine cloth works. Three years later, the Catholic hospital on Propsteistraße was inaugurated, and operations began with four religious sisters. Growing demands soon made expansion and modernization necessary. By 1915, the hospital had 120 beds after extensive new construction.
