Luisenstraße

The Luisenstraße is a city street in Wuppertal-Elberfeld and is considered the "Wuppertal Old Town." The district around the street is called Luisenviertel.

The Luisenstraße was created by private individuals during the expansion of Elberfeld to the west at the beginning of the 19th century and opened in 1926. It runs in an east-west direction from near Neumarkt to Briller Straße and forms a parallel road to Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, the main street of the district, slightly to the north. The street is named after Luise of Prussia, who lived during the time of its construction. With her name, the Luisenstraße received a very popular street name at the time, as streets and squares named Luisen or Louisen were also established around the same period in Berlin, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Darmstadt, and many other German cities.
