Port Lahnstein

The port of Lahnstein consists of two parts. At the mouth of the Lahn, on the right bank of the Rhine between river kilometer 584.70 and 585.30, lies the harbor basin, and at kilometers 587.064 and 587.663 is the river port. The port of Lahnstein belongs to the port operations of Rhineland-Palatinate in Ludwigshafen.
As early as the early Middle Ages, there was a transshipment point in Lahnstein where goods were transferred between Lahn barges and Rhine ships. The existence of a customs office was first documented in 1298. In 1860, the first port basin, separated from the Rhine, was built. Around 1864, a railway connection to the Lahntal Railway was also established, which made the transshipment of goods from the hinterland, such as the famous Lahn marble, possible. The port entrance was moved from the Rhine side to the Lahn side in 1939, and the harbor basin took its current form between 1962 and 1970.
Originally, two siding tracks accessed the port facility. The tracks have since been dismantled, but their former course is still clearly visible to the east of the harbor basin.
