Earring

The Öhr was a peninsula about 11 hectares in size located in the Schleswig district of Friedrichsberg at the western end of the Schlei. The peninsula was first mentioned in writing in 1654. It also bore the nickname Hillige Öhr, as the missionary Ansgar is said to have baptized several people in the Schlei there in the year 826 during the Viking Age. In the early modern period, the peninsula was closely associated with the nearby Gottorf Castle. In the 17th century, the area was given by the Gottorf Duke Frederick III to his chamberlain and building inspector Otto Jageteuffel as a hereditary lease. During the Second Schleswig War, a Danish entrenchment was located here to secure the Danewerklinie. To the north of the Öhr was the Tegelnoor, where several shipwrecks from the Thirty Years' War were discovered in the 19th century. To the south, the Öhr was bordered by the Otternkuhle, a bay of the Schlei that marked the boundary to the neighboring municipality of Busdorf.
